Soodhukavvum Movie Review

Cast : Vijay Sethupathi , Sanchitta Shetty

Direction : Nalan Kumarasamy

Music : Santhosh Narayanan

Producer : Studio Green

Tami Cinema’s future lies in the hands of Youngsters and it is really good to see Short Film directors hitting big in Feature Films. Nowadays, Producers are giving more importance to directors, especially Short Film directors, rather than big heroes. Vijay Sethupathi, who is from Short Films, is hitting really big in Tamil Cinema. This movie is expected as much as leading hero’s movies in Chennai. Movie is directed by yet another short film director “Nalan Kumarasamy”.

Karthik Subbaraj (Pizza Director), Balaji Mohan (Kadhalil Sodhappuvadhu Eppadi) and Nalan Kumarasamy were competing with each other in Nalaya Iyakunar Season 1. Balaji Mohan & Karthik Subbaraj gave us the best Tamil movies in 2012. Nalan Kumarasamy is the “Title Winner” of Nalaya Iyakunar. Let us see whether Nalan Kumarasamy can give us one of the best movies in 2013 & Vijay Sethupathi manages to hit hat-trick in this review

Story: New Genre for Tamil Cinema – Black Comedy Film (a humorous way of looking at or treating something that is serious or sad). Story revolves around 4 unemployed individuals (Vijay Sethupathi, Simha, Ramesh & Ashok) who kidnaps Minister M.S. Bhaskar’s son Karuna for huge money in the first half and the consequences they face in the second half.

Vijay Sethupathi recently won “Best Actor” for NKPK in Norway Tamil Film Festival. He had done a role, which is quite similar to Ajith’s role in Mankatha (even the story is quite similar). Though he had done only 2 Movies (Pizza & NKPK) as a leading hero, he has got popularity equal to a hero who had done more than 25 movies. He really deserves it as he had given a Subtle Performance in two best movies of Tamil Cinema. He had selected movies with different story lines & screenplay till date.

It seems Nalan didn’t want Vijay Sethupathi to cast as hero in this movie, as the lead role age should be 40+. Vijay Sethupathi openly confessed in the audio launch that he was impressed with the script and acted in this movie with recommendation of Karthik Subbaraj & C.V. Kumar He had done full justice to his role and no other actor can do this role better than him. His dialogue delivery and body language in the movie were too good.

Sanchita Shetty had acted as Tamanna’s sister in the movie “Thillalangadi” and as heroine in “Kollaikaran”. She plays the leading female role in the movie. Her characterization is very new to Tamil Cinema. She just comes in glamorous outfits to add spice to the movie. There is a scene in the movie, in which even Vijay Sethupathi teases her for coming in Swimming Suit when it is not needed.

Simha & Karuna have done a wonderful job along with two debutants – Ashok (Visual Communication passed out from Loyola College) & Ramesh (Radio Jockey in Suryan FM & have acted in Kaana Kaanum Kalangal). Simha, Ashok & Ramesh have as much screen presence as Vijay Sethupathi. Simha & Ramesh comedy timings in the first half was too good.

Santhosh Narayanan’s BGM is too important for this movie as it is a Crime Thriller. He had done full justice to this genre as BGM was too stylish and different. He gave wonderful songs in his earlier movies – Attakathi & Pizza. Songs in this movie were quite average only and luckily, songs were picturized only for 3 minutes in the movie

Editing is done by Leo John Paul. He did a wonderful job in Pizza and was one of the reasons for success of that movie.
He had yet again done a brilliant job. Nowadays, editors prefers Intercut shot method over flashback scenes. Intercut Shot means “If there is an instance in the movie, immediately the reason behind is explained). Most of the scenes in the second half were using this method. Second half seems to be quite dragging as there is absolutely no story in the movie and twists in the second half were not that engaging either.

Since, movie is based on Kidnapping, most of the scenes happens in the road. Cinematographer Dinesh Krishnan had wonderfully captured the kidnapping scenes.

Producer C.V. Kumar is creating a good trend in Tamil Cinema by encouraging new technicians from the short film industry.
His earlier movies Attakathi & Pizza were trend setting movies. This movie was brought by Studio Green even before the completion, which shows their faith on C.V. Kumar. It is distributed by Studio 9 & Abi Pictures, all over Tamil Nadu

Nalan Kumarasamy first short film title was “Oru Padam Edukannum” and he has achieved it now. He is one of the well respected person among short film directors in the industry. This movie is not only important for him, but also for other short film directors, as it will increase the confidence of the producers on short film directors. Surprisingly, he had taken a story which is quite familiar to us and tried to present it in a unique way. Kidnapping Scenes were captured brilliantly with lots of humour. First half of the movie was too good as it had wonderful comedy timing scenes. But, in the second half, since there was absolutely no story, scenes were not too engaging.

Overall, Soodhu Kavvum will receive mixed response from the audience as movie travels stylishly with good comedy & without story.

Verdict : Watchable
