Production : Thirukumaran Entertainment, Sangam cinemas

Thriller films are a rarity in Tamil. Some of the well received thrillers include “Athey Kangal” and, “Yavarum Nalam.” Debutant Karthik Subburaj has tried the genre of thriller in “Pizza” and let’s see whether he succeeds in it or not.

Michael (Vijay Sethupathy) ,a Pizza delivery boy and Anu (Ramya Nambeesan) his girl friend are in a live -in relationship. An unusual incident happens while Michael was on his way to deliver pizza at a house. What happens later is the story…

Kudos to Karthik Subburaj for an edge of the seat thriller. It seems he is a big fan of Manoj Night Shyamalan who grabbed our attention with his “Sixth Sense” which is known for its unusual ending. The film is a complete fresh experience for Tamil audience, with characters brilliantly sketched and the narration is top notch.

Pizza will be an important film in Vijay Sethupathy’s career and he has shown brilliant improvement in his acting. His body language and expression deserves a pat as it is very difficult to portray the entire bungalow episode on –screen with a believable acting . Vijay Sethupathy has done it with ease.

Ramya Nambeesan has done a neat performance and her romantic scenes with Vijay Sethupathy in the first half is novel. The dialogues between them is classy like the ones in Maniratnam’sfilms. Narain and other supporting characters have given a neat performance.

Cinematography plays a vital role in a thriller film and Gopi Amarnath has done an excellent job. The scenes in the bungalow which has to be shot with minimum usage of lighting has come out very well. Editing by Leo John Paul is crisp. Music by Santhosh Narayana of “Attakathi fame” is good and his background score gives the thrilling feel.

The climax is analogous to Mankatha but Karthik Subburaj’s screenplay and narration doesn’t make you to feel about that similarity. Over all the film is a refreshing and honest attempt by Karthik Subburaj. Welcome to the promising director’s team, Karthik
