‘A’ Protest by Transvestites for Narthagi

Narthagi is a film about transvestites made by Vijaya Padma and produced by ‘Punnagai Poo Geetha’ who produced popular films like Arindhum Ariyamalum and Pattiyal. This film has been making news for quite some time for its portrayal of transvestites.

The story revolves around the lives of transvestites, about a bharathanatyam dancer. The Thamizh Nadu Aravaanigal Sangam, shortly TAS, has come against the censor board for issuing an ‘A’ certificate.

Over 50 transvestites gathered in and around the Shastri Bhavan, which houses the censor board, to protest the issuance of ‘A’ certificate for the movie. The censor board lauded the director for depicting the lives of transvestites in a commercial format but that the film is too sensitive for children to handle which would give rise to confusions in their own sexual identity, said the censor board.\

Hence, it is given an A certificate. The film also has transvestites working in various departments from acting to the technical crew.
